We spent the last few weeks preparing our students and teachers to return to the classroom. These students are in first grade. The last two years of their lives have been rocked by the uncertainty that COVID has brought us, along with inconsistent school lessons due to the virus. As an organization it is our goal to make sure that no child is left without an education simply because they don't have access. We are so thankful and grateful to our teachers that have been working hard to keep these kids entertained and educated. One of the newest girls at the #marietompkinschampions Girl's home in Mymensingh completed this project last week. She's in first grade and is settling into the groove of going to school and living in a city. All of these girls come from single parent homes that cannot financially support the education of their children, especially their daughters. We are here to provide a place where parents know that their child's needs are being met - physical, mental, and spiritual. We shared with them the story of Noah and the promise that the rainbow represents. We also discussed how, even though the picture of the tiger looks scary with the baby in the mother's mouth, that the mother tiger is protecting her baby. It costs a minimum of $1100 a month to run this project (rough cost of about $100/month for housing, food, and education for each girl) and this month we need to purchase blankets and warm clothes for 4-6 girls. Last winter we had 5 girls living at the home. We started this project in December of 2020, and in less than 12 months we have filled the space with 11 girls. The only way to fulfill the promise we made to their parents is to have continuous support for the project. We may be at full capacity right now, but this is just the very beginning of this project and we are so amazed at what God has accomplished in the last year here. Small group classes are a great way for us to continue the education of our students, who have been out of formal school classes since May 2020. It’s also a great way for our teachers to focus on just a few students at a time - not something usually found in class sizes of 40-50. This is one of our pastors in Bangladesh, and his family. They live in the village and mentor, pray with, and provide church service for the families near them. Life in the village is very simple - it is not expensive to live there, as ownership of homes and land is passed down from generation to generation. It is also not a lucrative area. Families often live off of the money they can produce through farming. When you give to New Hope International, you are helping families like this grow their farms (two goats were purchased for this family from Christmas gifts) and pay for travel costs so our pastor can reach more Christians living in rural villages.

We can honestly say that having to close our daycare has done more harm than good this year. These kids are not only more exposed, but are exposing others more as they roam around the city. This is a portion of the slum neighborhood behind our daycare. In a stretch of about 1/4 mile live over 100 families crammed into tiny sheet metal homes. Our program enables young children to play in a safe environment while parents work to save money to eventually move out of this situation. No one in Bangladesh chooses to live in this situation. Often times they get stuck in these areas and are unable to save money to get into a proper home.
